performanceTHE PIECE ADDRESSES THE TRANSMISSION OF RITUALS IN AN UNBROKEN LINEAGE TOWARDS THE INDIVIDUAL IN MODERNITY. IT IS A CONTEMPLATION FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL SENTIENT BEINGS AND A MOURNING RITUAL FOR THE DYING, WITH A SPECIAL THOUGHT FOR VICTIMS OF THE RECENT EVENTS IN JAPAN.
Wegens Babeth's verblijf in het buitenland, heeft zij Grace de la Luna gevraagd om dit herdenkings ritueel uit te voeren in de oude kerk in Amsterdam tijdens de Museumnacht.
Voor deze herdenking is het voor iedereen mogelijk een foto of aandenken mee te nemen aan een dierbaar overleden mens of dier.
Het ritueel zal rond 21 uur plaatsvinden.Because of Babeth being abroad, she asked Grace de la Luna to help out doing the ritual in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam during the Museumnight.
For this commemoration it is possible for everybody to bring a photograph or other souvenir of a beloved deceased person or animal.

Helaas heeft de nieuwe eigenaar van de Chassekerk onder druk van het Haarlems Bisdom besloten zijn woord aan het iLLUSEUM om iig t/m eind September 2011 door te gaan met het uitvoeren van haar aktiviteiten aldaar, te breken.
Dwz. het iLLUSEUM moet per 5 september uit de kerk zijn en de met alle zorg voorbereide geplande programmering voor deze maand, waaronder de in samenwerking met het stadsdeel WUNDERBAR & voor het Septemberfestival TUSSENTIJDS REISBURO vallen hierdoor behoorlijk in het water !!! Op straffe van een half miljoen euros dwongen de representanten van het Haarlems Bisdom, Ymere en de nieuwe eigenaar tot het afstand doen van alle gebrandschilderde ramen en het verwijderen van alle ornamenten herinnerend aan het katholieke geloof , in veel gevallen betekent dit door het te vernietigen,het prachtige mozaiiek bijvoorbeeld, zal dichtgesmeerd met cement worden!
Ook de samenwerking met het iLLUSEUM moet ontbonden worden op grond van een door ons op het altaar geplaatst beeld , welke de Zon & de Maan voorstelde, welke door de roomse delegatie als heiligschennis werd bestempeld.Het iLLUSEUM betreurt het getuige te moeten zijn van een verminking aan een zeer bijzonder historisch gebouw. Iedereen die de oorspronkelijke ruimte nog wil meemaken is van harte welkom op een van onderstaande aktiviteiten die het iLLUSEUM nog zal presenteren in de voormalige kerk.
Het door ons geplande passende afscheid aan het einde van deze maand zal helaas niet meer plaatsvinden.

We are sad to tell you that the new owner of the former Chassechurch, decided to break his word to us. In an earlier stage , he promised us , we could continue our programming for at least the month of September.
Now under the pressure of a €500.000,00(!) fine by the Roman Catholic church , he decided to kick us out from the 5th of september. This means we have to cancel the many activities we had already planned and prepared, based on his word that we could stay during the whole month.
A lot of work, not only done by us, but also by the other people we were collaborating with, can go directly into the trashcan.......
This is a bitter truth, as is the fact that the new & the former owner, Ymere, are forced to remove or destroy not only us, but also all the beautiful stained glass windows, the mozaic altar piece of 2 angelic beings (which will be covered with concrete!) & other remains of the meaning the building once had.The reason why the turmoil with the diocese started was the visit of a Roman Catholic delegation last wednesday. The art piece we had placed on the former altar, representing the marriage between the Sun & the Moon, in many cultures known as the eyes of God, was considered as sacrilege by them. Because of this the new owner was forced to end his collaboration with us.
If anyone knows how to bring this under a larger attenttion, please don't hesitate but contact us.
We are shocked to see what evil power the institute church still has in 2011!We invite everybody cordially to the last chance to experience still the authentic glory of this beautiful, majestic building , during our 2 last events we will have here. Unfortunately we can't celebrate the proper closing event in the last period as we had planned.

On 25 May last the Surrealist painter and writer Leonora Carrington died in Mexico
City. She was 94 and has left an impressive body of work that is not very well known in the Netherlands. Her paintings are gardens of magical delights: marvellous people and animals and sometimes combinations of both perform curious acts in lush landscapes. Her stories are also peopled with weird and fanciful characters. Alchemy and metamorphosis are major themes of her detailed and humorous work. Carrington is unique among the Surrealists, and Mexico, her adopted country since WW II, considers her as one of their most celebrated artists. Tonie van Marle will present Leonora Carrington?s paintings and stories during the Wunderbar organized by the Illuseum

The Garden is a series of visionary images....a wild collage of video, super-8, 16mm and 35mm material woven together in director Derek Jarman's own personal, iconoclastic style. Surreal and dreamlike, it begins with the director alone in his cottage on the coast of Dungeness. Its a night full of rain and storm...and as he collapses from exhaustion, hallucinatory images flood the room. A sort of a swirling poetic apocalypse, which includes both christian symbols and the rampant plague of the Aids epidemic. In fact, as the director began filming The Garden, he fell seriously ill and was diagnosed HIV-positive, and this film is largely his reflections on the fragility of life. The film is one of the commanding works of personal cinema in the late 80's, and it would be the last of his films with such a vital and wide ranging scope, since he would soon go blind and die from his illness.
The film is a barrage of image and sound, without a normal storyline, bringing an experimental aesthetic to feature filmmaking. Director Jarman was able to break down the borders between radical art and the mainstream format like no other. Why do we always need a superficial narrative to keep our attention in the films that we watch? Jarman proves that we don't. The beautiful soundtrack by Simon Turner is a fluid rush of changing musical directions, ranging from pop music to the transcendental. The film also stars Tilda Swinton!

German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Veronika Voss is a film that is "part fairy tale, part melodrama, part horror film". Its his film about the end of cinema and the end of its romantic illusions. It is a beautiful, but edgy ride into the territory of Sunset Boulevard, the story of an aging silent film star who had been famous during the rise of Nazi Germany, but who in the 1950s has become addicted to morphine.
One stormy night she meets sports reporter Robert Krohn, who offers her his umbrella. They have a short affair, but soon afterwards she disappears. He becomes obsessed by her and tries to uncover the sinister plot which she is victim to. The film takes place in 1955, ten years after the end of the war, and the scars of German's recent past are still visible. This film is a real tour de force showing Fassbinder's prowling cinematic powers, and it turned out to be one of the last films he made before his sudden death in 1982. ( And, it's also one of his best !)

In French with English subtitlesUndoubtedly one of the highest points in Jean-Luc Godard's career, LE MEPRIS stars Michel Piccoli and Bridget Bardot in an unbeatbale film about life, cinema and love.
French New Wave director Godard had made five films previously to this one, and he was already considered an enfant terrible- both a genius and a troublemaker within the industry. All of his earlier films were low-budget affairs, but in this one he made a subversive jump into commercial filmmaking. It is a star-studded Cinemascope widescreen epic which is designed to both embrace and undermine the big Hollywood spectacles. Contempt (Le Mepris) stars Michel Piccoli as a screenwriter for hire, who is torn between his respect for a veteran European "artistic" director (played by legendary Fritz Lang), the demands of the arrogant American producer (Jack Palance), and the needs of his beautiful wife, Camille (Brigitte Bardot). The end result is one of the most revealing depictions of the nature of modern filmmaking.
The title "Contempt" is about the dilemma of the scriptwriter who is forced to make a piece of art into something more commercial, but it also refers to the contempt of his wife who no longer respects her husband. A film of "dazzling beauty and ground-breaking modernity", it is considered by many critics to be one of the 10 best films in the history of cinema. And I should also mention that it has a truly sublime musical soundtrack by Georges Delerue which is regarded as one of the best ever made for film.

La Belle et la Bête (1946)

In French with English subtitlesJean Cocteau's haunting adaption of the classic fairytale "Beauty and the Beast" by Madame Leprince de Beaumont is certainly one of the most beautiful films ever made, and is a necessary antidote to that sanitized phenomenon that we know as Disney. Today cinema has been dumbed down to the level that a ten-year old can easily understand it both in form and content. But cinema use to be exactly the opposite...it was an art form, and even when dealing with things like fairy-tales they were done with style, grace and depth. This film remains one of the greatest screen adaptions from a literary work in the history of cinema, filled with poetic images that sear into your brain....of flowing curtains or eyes that gleam with an unworldliness.
Made in 1946, in the ruins after WWII, maybe it could only be after a world wide disaster that a masterpiece of magic and beauty like this could be created out of its ashes. Surreal, spellbinding, and visually gorgeous.

Very little dialogue, with English subtitlesWell we all know I guess that the great choreographer Pina Bausch died in June 2009. And of course in the cinemas now there is the Wim Wenders 3-D film which gets a lot of attention. Personally I was a bit put-off by this turn of events. The later cinema of Wim Wenders is almost always messy and unfocused. He lost most of his style long ago. And its also clear that if Pina had not died before the film began shooting, that the film would look drastically different. It would be more intelligent and more piercing and relevant.
But the most amazing thing for me was that this film by Wenders gets so much acclaim, when in fact the real movie, the movie that Pina made herself, Die Klage der Kaiserin, is totally forgotten about and is never screened. Even many dancers have no idea of its existence, and have never had the opportunity to see a good copy of this visionary work.
How to describe such an unusual film? The film's title seems elitist, and of course its a bit of a provocation. The film is a furious dance portrait composed of women, men, children and also, of course, passion. The dance takes an unusual trajectory through the city and the landscape around Wuppertal, where the choreographer Pina Bausch lived and worked for almost forty years.Even though it is a full length feature film, during the entire course of its running time a story can only barely be imagined.Instead the film digs deep into sensations, atmospheres both seen and heard. Pina both explores the social stereotypes that holds our so-called civilization together, and at the same time tears them apart. She exposes the awkwardness and frailty of existence in imagery which is often bordering on the surreal and the absurd. And principally, it's also a film about the seasons.The leaves in autumn, the snow of winter, the grass in spring. There is a desire screaming beneath the surface of this film- both the need to be loved, and fear of death. Once again, this is not a dance film about form for form's sake, but rather to communicate a message that has to be interpreted by the viewer. Simply gorgeous.

De 'ARTIFICIAL PARADISE' georganiseerd door het iLLUSEUM is een labyrinthische ervaring in de prachtige voormalige Chassekerk, die binnenkort verbouwd gaat worden, de kerk heeft vanaf 1 September een nieuwe eigenaar!
Sinds Alle Zielen 2010 heeft het iLLUSEUM deze kerk beheerd & herdoopt tot de EEUWIGHEID.

Sad but true , saturday will be one of the last chances to visit Eternity in this building in all its original glory.
During this interactive event the visitor will imagine himself being part of the collective memory of the building.
The audience can experience the 1920ies as an actor, (historical or anthropological) voyeur, or simply as a tourist.
Music & decorations, all will be in 20ies style , dresscode is recommended but not obliged.

Dag van de Doden & Allerzielen
Op Dinsdag 2 november vindt er een bijzondere viering plaats in de voormalige Chassékerk, die eigenlijk & voortaan weer DE EEUWIGHEID heet. Op initiatief van Het Illuseum kunnen alle Amsterdammers tijdens Allerzielen hun geliefde overledenen herdenken.
DE EEUWIGHEID opent op 2 november om 19.00 uur haar deuren. Bezoekers kunnen een foto of een ander aandenken van een dierbaar mens of dier meenemen. Dit persoonlijke aandenken kan op het altaar bijgezet worden. In ruil ontvangen de bezoekers een glas tequila. Om 20.00 uur zal de Mexicaanse Nederlander (dubbel paspoort?) Edoardo Ramos Anaya een traditioneel Azteeks Dia de los Muertos (Dag van de Dood) ritueel uitvoeren.
Vervolgens zal Frans Fontaine, hoofd tentoonstellingen Tropenmuseum, een toelichting verschaffen over de verschillen & de overeenkomsten tussen de Mexicaanse & de Hollandse Dag van de Allerzielen.
In DE EEUWIGHEID zijn een aantal opstellingen verzorgd door Ida van der Lee. Zij is bekend van haar project “Allerzielen Alom - Kunst tot herdenken”* & heeft met een team van kunstenaars diverse rituelen voor dierbaren verzorgd. Zo kunt u o.a. langs het “Tijdkantoor”, “Herinnerdingen” & “Hiernamaals”. Voorts is er een verrassing van Henk Schiffmacher.
Tijdens het Mexicaanse Dia de los Muertos is het uitgangspunt: “maak een rijk feestmaaltijd, het mag de doden aan niets ontbreken”. In DE EEUWIGHEID is er 2 november voldoende voor de doden & de levenden!

Day of the dead - All Souls
A very special celebration will take place on Tuesday the 2nd of November in what is now called: De Eeuwigheid (eternity) , the former Chassekerk - Chassestraat 62, Amsterdam. The iLLUSEUM initiates an all souls - celebration for the people in Amsterdam to remember their beloved dead.
DE EEUWIGHEID will open her doors at 19:00 on the 2nd of November. Visitors can bring a picture or souvenir of a beloved - human or animal. The keepsakes can be put on the altar. In exchange a glass of tequila will be handed to everybody. At 20:00 the Mexican - Dutch ( double passport ) Edoardo Ramos Anaya will perform a traditional Aztek Dia de Los Muertos ( Day of the Dead ) - ritual.
After this, the head of rhe exhibition department of the Tropical Museum will present an explanation about the differences and similarities between the Mexican and the Dutch day of All Souls.
A number of installations will be presented by Ida van der Lee in DE EEUWIGHEID . She is known for her project "Allerzielen Alom" ( All Souls Around - Art for Remembering ) and with a group of artist she provided a number of rituals for loved ones. You can view or take part in : "Time-office", "Memory - things" and the "Hereafter". There will also be a surprise by Henk Schiffmacher.
During the Mexican Dia de los Muertos the motto is: make a plentiful diner, the dead must have enough". In DE EEUWIGHEID on the 2nd of November there'll be plenty for the dead and the living !

*Vijf jaar Allerzielen Alom- kunst tot herdenken
Allerzielen Alom biedt met inzet van kunst gelegenheid om de doden te herdenken op een manier die aansluit bij de samenleving van nu. Het geeft opnieuw vorm aan een van oorsprong katholieke traditie, maar is niet gebonden aan een religie. Begraafplaatsen en kerken worden gastvrij ingericht met licht, vuur, klank en kunst. Kunst is de motor van de verbeelding en geeft toegang tot het mysterie van de dood.
In 2005 begon Ida van der Lee met het initiatief op de Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats in Amsterdam. Inmiddels is het overal in het land opgepakt door gemeenschappen, uitvaartorganisaties en kunstinstellingen. In vijf jaar tijd bezochten 35.000 mensen de meer dan veertig vieringen die geïnspireerd zijn door dit concept. De dodencultuur in Nederland wordt hiermee verrijkt en vernieuwd.

Terugkeer van de WONDERKERMIS
Op zondag 3 oktober 2010 presenteert het iLLUSEUM tussen 14:00 en 21:00 in en rond de Chassekerk de Terugkeer van de WONDERKERMIS. Op deze eigentijdse kermis voor jong en oud is een internationale keur aan artiesten te zien, onder andere: de magier Ramana, de vuurspuwende Pyromancer, verhalenvertellers, de Frietcowboys, de Parijse band Ithak, exotische muziek en thee in de Chaikhana. Eten en drinken en meer.
Helaas komt het onderdeel Trash & Treasures te vervallen. Maar in plaats hiervan nu het SPIRITUEEL BORDEEL op het kerkplein in een heuse yurt waarin een voorstelling waar theater op een hilarische manier wordt verenigd met spiritualiteit. Archetypen als Osho, Eckhart Tolle, Brandon Bays en de Boeddha passeren op humoristische wijze de revue, terwijl de diepste betekenis van hun wijsheden uiteraard intact blijft. Het wordt een dag om nooit te vergeten!
De verhalenverteller Sahand Sahebdivani wordt begeleidt door Karim Eharruyen. Hoffotograaf Karoly Almoes maakt uw nostalgisch portret, de allerkleinsten dansen in de mini-disco met DJ Goldfinger. Verrassende beelden en klanken in de Omfoteka. De vermaarde danser Kenzo Kusuda treed op in 3 voorstellingen begeleid door verschillende muzikanten: Oene van Geel - Viola, Karim Eharruyen - Ud en Ned mc Gowan Contrabasfluit. Bent u uw oude jurk zat ? Recycle hem in de modeworkshop onder begeleiding van danser/ontwerper Murugalas ! Choghtu Khong Tayiji, born Tümengken (1581-1637), was a ruler of the Khalkha Mongols. He expanded into Amdo (present-day Qinghai) to help the Karma sect of Tibetan Buddhism but was overthrown by Güüshi Khan, who supported the rival Geluk sect.
He established a base on the Tula river. Known as an intellectual he embraced the Karma sect and built monasteries and castles.He submitted himself to Lingdan Khan, last grand khan of the Mongols. He took part in Lingdan's campaign to Tibet to help the Karma sect although Lingdan Khan died in 1634 before they joined together. But he pursued the campaign. In the same year he conquered the Tümed around Kokonor (Qinghai Lake) and moved his base there. By request from Shamar Rabjampa he sent an army under his son Arslan to central Tibet in 1635. However, Arslan attacked his ally Tsang army. He met the fifth Dalai Lama and paid homage to Gelukpa monasteries instead of destructing them. Arslan was eventually assassinated by Choghtu's order.
The Geluk sect asked for help Törü Bayikhu (Güüshi Khan), the leader of the Khoshuud tribe of the Oirat confederation. In 1636 Törö Bayikhu led the Khoshuud and the Dzungars to Tibet. In the next year a decisive war between Choghtu Khong Tayiji and Törü Bayikhu ended in the latter's victory and Choght was killed.
Descendants of Sutai Yeldeng, Choghtu's grandson, succeeded the jasagh of a banner in Sayin Noyan Ayimagh.
He has traditionally been portrayed as evil by the Geluk sect. On the other hand, the Mongolian movie "Tsogt tayj" (1945) treated him as a national hero. It reflected the communist regime's attitude toward Tibetan Buddhism.

In dit projekt (toerist in eigen buurt) reizen toeristen in een
prachtige oldtimer bus naar drie bijzondere lokaties ( in de
Baarsjes ) waar speciale voorstellingen gaan plaatsvinden. Ter
ondersteuning van een van deze gebeurtenissen zoeken wij deelnemers,
liefst uit de buurt, die het leuk vinden in een koor te zingen om een
gelegenheidscompositie ten gehore te brengen. Dit olv koordirigent
Laurens van der Klis, die onlangs in de Baarsjes is komen te wonen.
Enige koor-ervaring meegenomen, niet vereist.
De repetities zullen plaatsvinden op 3 woensdagavonden om 20:00.

There is so much to be said from a personal and nostalgic perspective, about
this, our first feature length documentary. For those of you who are unfamiliar
with our work, we are Freedom Central. We provide a platform for information not
provided to you by the main stream media. We have no bosses or paymasters and
our work has proven dangerous at times.In October 2009, when Freedom Central was in it?s infancy, having completed only
three interviews, one with David Icke, we were attacked after a conference in
Brussels where we had conducted interviews with Marcel Messing, Bill Ryan and
Kerry Cassidy of Project Camelot, Stephen Bassett of the Exopolitics movement,
Peter Vereecke who is known as the “chem trail mayor from Belgium” amongst
several others. This attack involved us being gassed in our sleep and our media
equipment being taken from us.This was our darkest hour. We had given up everything after we had gone through
a full awakening of consciousness to do this work, and now all our equipment was
gone and we were hardly in a position to replace it. But it is when we are faced
with adversity that we excel as human beings. Due to the unconditional love of
several complete strangers, who heard of our troubles and lovingly helped us
replace part of our media equipment, we were able to make this film. We then
managed to obtain some spectacular interviews with some of the most
inspirational people in the world today some of whom came into our lives with
such beautiful synchronicity. All these interviews are available on our website
to view.It was an honor and a pleasure to be blessed with the time of the likes of
Patricia Cori and David Icke twice, then there is our dear friend and fellow
light worker Charlie Veitch of the Love Police, as well as obtaining an amazing
two and a half hour interview with Bill Ryan of Project Camelot, not to mention
a very moving interview with the magnificent Marcel Messing. These people have
taught us so much in the information they have allowed us to capture, that we
were able to become very intimate with this material, to discover a thread of
constancy that kept coming up amongst all of these wonderful and inspiring
people who had shared their time with us.With this collective montage of concentrated wisdom, Freedom Central humbly

De Nederlandse Cocaïne Fabriek sleept ons mee in het wereldbeeld van een 63-jarige weledelgeboren cocaïnegebruiker. Hoofdpersoon Arend wordt afgeluisterd en bespied. Hij verdenkt de informatiemaatschappij. Ze houden elkaar nauwlettend in de gaten via internet, telescoop en verrekijker. De film volgt Arend richting 'Solutions', met onderweg een poging om een oud Nederlands bedrijf nieuw leven in te blazen: de Nederlandse Cocaïne Fabriek (tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Nederland de grootste producent van kwaliteitscocaïne). Ook is er een feest bij Erwin Olaf, waar decadent uitgedoste gasten zich te goed doen aan coke. De kracht van de beelden, de structuur van de film en de onwaarschijnlijkheid van de gebeurtenissen doen denken aan fictie. Maar het documentairedebuut van Jeanette Groenendaal vertelt de waarheid en niets dan de waarheid.

At the heart of Jeanette Groenendaal’s Dutch Cocaine Factory resides Arend ter Horst, a 63-year-old cocaine addict who betrays all the signs of acute paranoia. It becomes very clear early on in the film that this paranoia is far from misplaced.
‘I was shocked to read [transcripts of] the telephone calls that I had made to Arend,’ explains Groenendaal. ‘I always thought fear of telephone taps was just paranoid, and that I had nothing to hide, but when I read back everything, that was when I decided to make this film.’
So Groenendaal commences a documentary journey with Arend that reveals the terrifying degree of surveillance – or ‘digital chasing’, as a Dutch lawyer refers to it – that takes place within the Netherlands. ‘I took my camera along because I wanted to find out what was going on; what was right and wrong. And was I a suspect as well?’ En route, she tells the story of the original Dutch cocaine factory which, in the 1920s, imported up to 2 million pounds (900 tons) of cocoa leaves per year to fire an extremely profitable – and perfectly legal – industry. Cocaine wine was delivered to the Pope and the American president, who commented on the ‘excellent mood’ it created. Eventually the US, unable to break into the lucrative cocaine trade, introduced a prohibition whose global influence became endemic.
The character of Arend fills the film. The CCTV footage of the police raid on his house at the beginning is genuinely shocking. Later in the film, he calls ‘cut!’; an instruction taken on board in a filmic sense by Groenendaal, until she realises that it’s the cocaine that he wants cut, not the camera. The footage of his withdrawal from its use is disturbing, but he reveals a deliciously dry humour when assessing the substitute substances deployed to bulk out the coke. ‘It’s no longer the real thing,’ he observes.
‘I think he is a visionary,’ comments Groenendaal. ‘In India, a person on the edge of society who has been using drugs for forty years would be a holy man. In our past in Holland, we have given space to these people to grow and experiment. Now, within this new, controlled society, we are suddenly criminalising them.’

The new Lola film is something unusual,where one cannot and does not want to separate documentary from fiction,social realism from surrealism, tragedy from comedy.
Lola lives in a squat in the Red Light district of Amsterdam.
She is a young illegal Russian immigrant, . How does she see the world around her? How does she survive? Through the magic camera of the Latvian arist Valerie Schepper, we enter the free Amsterdam of the early 90's with its street music and underground life.
This unique chronicle of a time forever lost is the result of years of painstaking cutting down the hundreds of hours of footage, Schepper has shot following Lola on her poignant & lonesome quest.
Lola's english Lessons is een prachtige kroniek van een bijzondere tijd in de geschiedenis van Amsterdam. Hoewel duister, was dit tijdsgewricht kenmerkend voor een enorme vrijheidsdrang en kruisbestuiving. Tot op de dag van vandaag blijkt deze inspirerend. De mogelijke reden waarom we niet zonder enige melancholie en ver- & be-wondering naar Lola kunnen kijken. Het is een uniek poetisch videodocument van de Letse, in Nederland wonende , kunstenaar Valerie Schepper. Hij volgde Lola indertijd op de voet, met zijn videocamera en nam jaren de tijd om deze tragicomedie tot een waar juweel te edit-en.
Veel al in het absurde decor van de gekraakte Patapoebar op de Amsterdamse wallen bevolkt door lieden van divers pluimage volgen we het leven van Lola.
Haar dramatische verwikkelingen zijn niet gespeelt al lijkt dit soms wel zo.
Bijzonder ook is de memorial ( voor Arkadi Len) performance van de legendarische obscurantistische groep ZYKLUS ( met Grace de la Luna, Gerard Riksen ) , die ooit de bakermat vormde voor het huidige iLLUSEUM!
Een ander aardig detail is de verschijning van Jeanette Groenendaal als bardame van de Patapoebar!
Beide films worden bijgewoond en ge- introduceerd door de makers, van wie ook een speciaal optreden zal worden verwacht...........

This film is basically just dueling images of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his wife Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge as they recite their manifesto on the subject of the melding of the sexes. The P-Orridges had been undergoing surgical procedures to look alike so that they could be considered one being. Sadly, however, Lady Jaye passed away last year, but at least there’s this document recording what they were attempting to achieve.

On one of my explorations through hagiographic literature in the Central Library of Amsterdam, I came across a text which just mentioned a piece of very very odd behavior, where early Christians literally joined the flock.
Historical back-ground:
When Christianity was legalized by Roman Emperor Constantine, the Christian Saints were no longer prosecuted. To prove their dedication to faith they found a new way to suffer, Asceticism. Soon this practice got really out off hand and people would come up with ever less comfortable ways of existence. Starving and suffering, they could go for hours, or even days without the normal signs of life. Dead to the world they lived in God. Saints became like athletes of Christ and in this passage I read the most stunning account yet, that there were even hermits who grazed like sheep. The golden age of grazers was the 6th century, when people ate grass all their lives at the coasts of the Red Sea.
In Literature:
In 'Tales of Early Ages' by Horace Smith, this passage appears on page 171, claiming the grazing hermits where known by the name of Bosci and were located it the Thebaid, the Southern most part of Egypt.
…..Of the same class but labouring under a less desperate hallucination were the Bosci, or grazing hermits, hirsute, bearded, satyr-like savages, clad in the skin of wild beasts; who having neither cells nor habitation of any sort, but living like the cattle in the fields, spent their whole time in praying and singing psalms, and when hungry, tore up with their nails the grass and wild herbs, which they devoured without cooking.
In 'An introduction to the history of the Western tradition' by Edgar Nathaniel Johnson on page 359 notes:
The Anchorage is to be met in such extravagant types as grazing hermits, those living on grass or herbs, and pillar saints such as Saint Simeon Stylites, who spent some thirty years atop of a sixty foot pillar.
W.H.C. Frend claims 178 Boskoi existed in a book entitled 'The Rise of Christianity' page 578.
There were Boskoi monks,178 those who grazed grass like animals, or burdened themselves with iron collars and heavy chains. On the fringes of orthodoxy,…
Edward Gibbon writes in his work 'The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire', in Chapter XXXVII:
….some savage saints of both sexes have been admired, whose naked bodies were only covered by their long hair. They aspired to reduce themselves to the rude and miserable state in which the human brute is scarcely distinguishable above his kindred animals; and the numerous sect of Anachorets derived their name from their humble practice of grazing in the fields of Mesopotamia with the common herd. They often usurped the den of some wild beast whom they affected to resemble; they buried themselves in some gloomy cavern, which art or nature had scooped out of the rock; and the marble quarries of Thebais are still inscribed with the monuments of their penance.
note: Sozomen, l. vi. c. 33. The great St. Ephrem composed a panegyric on these or grazing monks, (Tillemont, Mem. Eccles. tom. viii. p. 292.)
On page 317 in a Chapter called 'The Mental Condition of Hermits', John William Draper offers a glimpse of grazing hermits in his book titled; 'A History of the Intellectual Development of Europe.'
If they were not recorded by many truthful authors, the extravagancies of some of these enthusiasts would pass belief. Men and women ran naked upon all fours, associating themselves with the beasts of the field. In the spring season, when the grass is tender, the grazing hermits of Mesopotamia went forth to the plains, sharing with the cattle their filth and their food.
Derek Krueger writes in his work entitled; 'Symeon the Holy Fool, Leontius’ Life and the Late Antique City':
…Leontius provides a chronology of Symeon’s career before his arrival in Emesa in Syria. He narrates how Symeon left his native Edessa to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, how he and his friend John first entered a monastery in the Jordan and later lived as hermits, grazing in the desert like sheep.
…..in the first half of the Life, Leontius presents Symeon and his friend John as living as grazers (βοσκο?) in the Syrian desert. An account of such grazers, unrelated to the account ? of Symeon of Emesa, can be found in the first book of Evagrius’s History. [47] As Rydén has observed, Leontius seems to combine Evagrius’s account of the boskoi with the account of Symeon of Emesa when he composes his full-length vita.[48] Leontius uses the time Symeon “spent” as a boskos to account for how he achieved the state of apatheia, so important to Leontius’s understanding—indeed his construction—of Symeon.
In 'Crimes of Christianity' by G W Foote & J M Wheeler in Chapter III:
In Mesopotamia and Palestine the Boskoi wandered on all fours, grazing like cattle. St. Mark, of Athens, lived in this way till his body was covered with hair like a wild beast's. St. Mary, of Egypt, also, during her penance, lived on grass, after the manner of Nebuchadnezzar. The great St. Ephrem, according to Tillemont, composed a panegyric on these pious cattle.
On page 41 in 'A New History of Chrisianity' Vivian Green writes:
Near Nisibis there lived a group of Boskoi or grazing monks. When meal time came they took sickles and sallied forth to cut grass and on this they made their repast as if they were cattle. Others the so-called Dendrites lived in trees.

There is a longer section on Boskoi in 'Wandering, Begging Monks; Spiritual Authority and the Promotion of Monasticism in Late Antiquity' by Daniel Caner starting on page 50.
Writing in Constantinople in the middle of the fifth century, the church historian Sozomen believed the first monks of Syria were those who had 'emulated the monks of Egypt in the practice of philosophy' by scraping a raw existence off the mountains near the Persian frontier…. Wrapped in goatskins or straw mats, boskoi monks pursued a decidedly counter-cultural anachoresis. Hunters were believed to sometimes mistake them for strange animals…. As celebrated in Syrian chant:
Those who graze on grass and roots instead of delicacies,
and in place of lofty dwellings, live in caves.
Like birds they go up to live on rocky ledges,
Where ever one of them goes,
he enjoys the herbs he picked in faith,
he leaves the rest behind and moves on from there,
because he has heard the saying;
Do not be anxious about tomorrow.
Such zealots for 'freedom from care' not only avoided artificial shelter and clothing, but rejected all ordinary labors by which human beings obtained their food. According to Sozomen this 'strict philosophy off the beaten track of mankind' had been introduced to Syria by a monk named Aones 'just as Anthony introduced it to Egypt.'Aones is otherwise unknown, but the ascetic lifestyle associated with him is familiar to what we have already seen of Bessarion and other wanderers in Egypt. In fact, testimony from the Western Mediterranean to Northern Mesopotamia shows that the lifestyle attributed to only a few Egyptian monks was one that many adopted wherever there was enough vegetation to survive. It especially came into vogue in Syria, Mesopotamia and Palestine. Here monks could easily follow the footsteps of their Old Testament forebears (the patriarchs and the prophets) and imitate their nomadic patterns. Near Eastern hinterlands offered more possibilities for healthy sustenance than the Egypt desert did, nuts, asphodel roots and a juicy thistle (mannouthia) that grew on the desert fringe may even account for the reported longevity of many who took up the diet. In cultivated regions they could live by scavenging garden fruits and vegetables. They may have also picked tares off the ground or used their sickles to reap uncut corners of fields set aside for the poor to glean in accordance ancient charitable custom. Although one admirer in the fifth century expressed concern that some Boskoi were settling down and taking up agriculture, their ascetic lifestyle (as distinct from other forms of anachoresis) would long persist among Christian monks, both male and female. Late into the sixth century they could still be glimpsed roaming along the Dead Sea coast or forging in the Palestine desert naked 'like animals… nolonger human in the way they thought.'

1. The Garden of Eden (during New Atlantis Festival initiated & organized by the iLLUSEUM in 2005)
'The Garden of Eden' was a workshop for children developed and led by me.
To make a film during the workshop was a part of the concept.
I combined the children's ideas and games with grown ups being interviewed on the subject The garden of Eden.
2. Factor (made for the present iLLUSEUM theme Dierbaar Bestiarium)
· It links to George Bataille, who always carried a photo of a man who was executed in a horrible way: The 'Ling Chi Execution'.
· John Zorn was inspired by this and made a song called 'Leng Che' that's part of his album Naked City, where he used this photo as the album cover.
· The Gorilla heads symbolise the 'Guerrilla girls': a feministic group of female artistsfrom the U.S. who fight against the women discrimination in the art world.
Ai Koyama:
Legacy of the Barbarian
is the physical solo improvisation by Ai Koyama.
Inspired by herself as a child of the land of the rising sun. The mother in her mind illuminates her way of unique performative communication through her physicality: instinctive , honest, sensitive and powerful. This is a little monologue for those who are interested to listen .

Born in Japan, Ai started to learn classical ballet when she was 5 years old with Tatuo Kasuya in Mito city. At the department of Performing Arts in Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, she studied contemporary dance and started to create her own pieces. She came to Amsterdam in 2003 to study dance choreography at School for New dance development. She worked with cie Heddy Maalem in 2006, and is working with cie Linga since 2007 as a dancer. Her choreographies are works of continuous research. Ai is based in Amsterdam.

on their way to do a concert invited by Mary Baermeister in her atelier, the most cherished place of all Fluxus people, Kommisar Hjuler +Frau will do a one-of-a-kind concert at the iLLUSEUM.
Mary Baermeister is the first wife of Karlheinz Stockhausen and a good friend of Niki de St. Phalle and Robert Rauschenberg.
Besides being an avant-garde painter, German artist Mama Baer gives music performances together with her husband Kommissar Hjuler as well (recently they collaborated with Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore !).
He proofs that being a headofficer of police is not mutually exclusive with being a great artistic performer. Together Mama Baer and Kommissar Hjuler frequently perform with their 'dada-esque sound poetry'.
Saturday the 1st of August this unique duo will amaze Amsterdam with a concert in the iLLUSEUM, starting at 20:30, entrance: 6 euros.Naast haar beeldend werk is de Duitse avant-garde kunstenares Mama Baer (o.a. bekend van samenwerking met 'Sonic Youth') ook bekend als muzikante. Samen met haar man Kommissar Hjuler brengt zij geregeld hun 'dadaeske geluidspoezie' ten gehore. (hun meest recente release is met 'Sonic Youth' Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore '!)
Kommissar Hjuler bewijst dat een functie als hoofdkommissaris van de politie best gepaard kan gaan met een leven als artistiek performer.
Zaterdag 1 augustus zullen de klanken van dit bijzondere duo de sfeer van het iLLUSEUM verrijken tijdens een eenmalig concert, aanvang 20:30, entree: 6 euro. The series are made by Mama Baer and are inspired by an apocalyptic vision of humankind on the verge of extinction by a virus of some sort. Related to a poisonous plant that MamaBaer read about in an article of a science magazine from the sixties in the period she was asked by the iLLUSEUM to participate in the Dierbaar Bestiarium exhibition.

Walking is the cement of all my work; To walk in an intense and prolonged manner from one point to another allows one.
What purpose do our knees serve? Our ears? Our elbows?... We have been given a body and a space to use it in.
This works is involving life, is involving walk.
A kind of hymn to life.

"My vocal work consists of a sonorous multitude of tunes, vocal rhythms, songs, whistlings...
All these things which come through me during long walking journeys or during physical and manual work.
I try, with as little effects as possible (my body, my voice, little bells and a harmonica), to express all of this in a lively and musical way.A kind of "hymn to life"; "Why do we have arms, elbows, knees, vocal chords...?""
"I have always worked around travelling in a non-motorised way (mainly walking) across the natural environment Walking is the cement of all my work; graphic, oral (vocal percussion) and narrative (comics). We live in an age where everything is made to distance man from nature. To walk in an intense and prolonged manner from one point to another allows one, like all healthy and intelligent manual work, to become aware of life and to find our human roots. To be in touch with the energy which beats within. What purpose do our knees serve? Our ears? Our elbows?... We have been given a body and a space to use it in. In us all, a creative fibre. Walking is an act of life towards the development of this fibre. This works is involving life, is involving walk.We are alive!
With Christine Quoiraud, dancer/walker/choregrapher, I took part in a three-week residential workshop on the theme of walking and dancing in the Moroccan desert, near Meski. This time devoted to the body made a huge emotional impact on my life; I've realised, among other things, that the vocal percussion that I have practised for 13 years now, was the rhythm of my life and my steps

Reverend Steven Johnson Leyba is the kind of man who will paint all over the American flag then remind you that "flag etiquette" has been royally pissed on by most major designers without anyone raising an eyebrow. He will have a swastika cut into his back while reminding you that this is an ancient symbol... then he'll wonder aloud how many people were killed in the name of the sanctified Holy Cross. Reverend Leyba is a legally ordained Priest in the Church of Satan. He is known in the underground art world as the "Father of Sexpressionism". The man views every kind of bodily excretion as a viable medium with which to paint. He is deeply in touch with his Native American ancestry. These juxtapositions may seem like a lot to ponder, but they represent just a scratch on the surface. For nearly two years, Reverend Leyba permitted the filmmaker's cameras to observe his life, his art, and his infamous personal rituals. Some of this extraordinarily unique footage charts a terrain of human behavior that has rarely, if ever, been explored within the documentary form. The Reverend's prolific and varied artistic output reflects his unyielding political and religious opinions. "UNSPEAKABLE" captures the unusual behavior of this Satanic Priest and takes a firsthand look at the issues that propel his work. Milton paart zijn verknipte en gepassioneerde gedachtepatronen met krijsende solovluchten en veeltongige stem terwijl zijn band een ingewikkeld traliewerk van achtergrondritmes bij elkaar timmert om hem op te laten rondgolven. Blurt's hoekige gepatineerde white - funk verwerpt iedere poging tot duiding, integraal uitgelicht door Ted Milton eigenaardige expressionistische saxofoon excursies.
Drums gitaar en saxofoon, dat is alles. Het resultaat: een geinspireerde of imbeciele uitstoot van de meest valse jazz-punk-funk-rock modder die ooit je oorkanaal bevuilde. Met bedwelmende woede laat het heetrode sporen achter. Huilend en krassend; snijdend met een gekartelde en scherpe snede.

LONELINESS IS FULL OF LIFE
Frans Post Uiterweer
Op een 'Bullet' van Royal Enfield, een engelse motorfiets uit 1933 die nog gewoon verkrijgbaar is, trok Frans Post Uiterweer over de hoogste passen van de Himalaya. Hij maakte daar een prachtige foto- en reis verslag in noord-west India, Ladakh's Indus vallei.
Op 26 maart verschijnt er een artikel in het glossy heren LifeStyleMagazine BIG BLACK BOOK met deze prachtige foto- en reisreportage.
14 maart begint de fotoexpositie ' Loneliness is full of Life ' in het iLLUSEUM , waarop wij u allen hopen te verwelkomen , om tijdens het nuttigen van een drankje weg te kunnen dromen bij dit ooggetuige verslag van een wonderbaarlijk mooie wereld, die vlak bij de hemel is gelegen.

Riding a 'Bullet', a motorbike from 1933, produced untill now by Royal Enfield, the freelance photographer Frans Post Uiterweer crossed the Himalaya over the highest passes. He made an exquisite photoreportage of this journey in North-west India, Ladakh, Indus valley.
This resulted in the article which will be released on the 26th of March by the glossy LifeStyle Magazine, the Big Black Book for gentlemen.
