Gabriela Leon is a media artist from Mexico who combines a critical approach towards the human world with poetic craftmanship in various disciplines.
In her project “Beauty World” for instance the glamourous style of the cosmetic and fashion world is being copied in a series of photographs of barbies, mnnequins and sculpted soaps for which *‘the raw material ( human fat, skin ) would be obtained only from cosmetic surgery waste: liposuction, lipectomies and breast reduction surgeries..’* *( website: gabrielaleon.com )

In her upcoming exhibition in the iLLUSEUM apart from the work mentioned above Gabriela Leon will be presenting an installation with foto's from an artistic action she performed in and about the current political situation in Oaxaca, the city where she lives and works and where almost unnoticed by the world a civil resistance from the people of Oaxaca against a corrupted regime is happening. She will be showing a film she and other artists: Alejandro Echeverria, Alberto Ibañez "el negro", Eva Verardo and Oscar Javier Martinez made about Oaxaca ( during and about ) these events..

 

 

Visual Resistenz

Oaxaca is de op vijf na grootste deelstaat van Mexico. De bevolking bestaat voornamelijk uit inheemse indianen en behoort tot de armste in de regio. De Spanjaarden veroverden het gebied op de Azteken en gaven in 1529 een van hun beste architecten, Garcia Bravo, de opdracht een stad, Oaxaca de Juárez, te bouwen. Op de Azteekse begraafplaats ontwierp hij de Plaza Central, met aan de ene kant een kathedraal en de andere kant het regeringspaleis.
Het is deze Plaza Central die, bijna per traditie, gedurende de maanden mei en juni door de stakende leraren van de deelstaat wordt bezet om hun eis voor salarisverhoging kracht bij te zetten. De gouverneur ziet het vanuit zijn regeringspaleis een tijdje aan, besluit te onderhandelen, de leraren krijgen hun extra pesos, men schud elkaar de hand en een ieder gaat met de woorden “tot volgend jaar” zijn weegs.

In 2006 besluit de zittende gouverneur, Ulises Ruíz, aan deze traditie een einde te maken. Op 14 juni geeft hij de oproerpolitie opdracht de staking op te breken, met als gevolg dat de protesten zich over de hele stad uitbreiden en op tal van plaatsen barricades worden gebouwd. Op 13 juli verenigen leraren, vakbonden, boerenorganisaties, niet-gouvernementele organisaties en tal van andere organisaties zich in de APPO (Asamblea Popular del Pueblo de Oaxaca). Zij eisen het aftreden van gouverneur Ruíz en kondigde aan de staatsregering van Oaxaca niet langer te erkennen. Gebouwen van de plaatselijke omroep Canal9, de universiteit en overheidsgebouwen worden bezet.

Onderhandelingen met de federale overheid leiden niet tot een oplossing. In de tussentijd intimideren oproerpolitie en gewapende milities de vreedzame actievoerders. Op 22 juli wordt het huis van Indianenleider Alejandro Cruz López’s met molotovcocktails bestookt. Op 9 augustus valt een bewapende militie het kantoor van de krant Noticias binnen en openen het vuur, waarbij 4 medewerkers van de krant gewond raken. Op 10 augustus wordt APPO activist José Jiménez Colmenares op straat dood geschoten.
Na vijf maanden protest worden in de middag van 27 oktober de barricades door politie en milities aangevallen. 23 actievoerders raken gewond, 3 overleven de aanval niet.
Op 29 oktober trekt de federale overheid met meer dan 4.000 ordetroepen (PFP) de stad in om een einde aan het protest te maken. Minstens 149 actievoerders worden gearresteerd en overgebracht naar de gevangenis in de afgelegen deelstaat Nayaris. Zij krijgen geen recht op bezoek of juridische bijstand.

Een vijftal kunstenaars uit Oaxaca heeft hun reactie op de staatsterreur in hun stad middels fotografie, film en installatie tot uitdrukking gebracht. Een van hen, Gabriela Leon, is door de stichting La Quinta Essentia uitgenodigd om het werk van deze kunstenaars in Nederland te exposeren. Zij ziet deze expositie als een kans om de terreur met beeldmateriaal onder de aandacht te brengen. Beelden waaruit moed en vastberadenheid, oog in oog met vertrappende onschuld en rechtvaardigheid, scherp in focus komen. Een serie beelden gemaakt in een gekwelde stad, maar die zich boven het lokale weet te verheffen en ons in Nederland de vraag stelt: wat doe ik in een situatie van onrecht?

The situation in Oaxaca is calm, pacific, everything is back to normal, aldus the words of the governor in the national media. The city tries to wear its make-up with a half-way dignity but still one can envisage under the new layers of paint the grafittis and symbols. Not all the broken windows have been replaced and the ashes from burned cars is still holding on to the walls. What is true is that the oficial numbers of disappearances, deaths and prisoners don't coincide with those of the human rights comission. It's sure that the gouvernement is investing a lot in reconstructing the city and on attracting tourism, so much that during the filming of some entertainment programs, police and helicopters were flying again over the city to be certain that there wouldn't be any disturbances that could contradict the tv program conductors, which were going out live on national tv, talking about the beauty of Oaxaca, as if nothing has happened here. And yes, indeed, each day there is more movement, you can now see tourists through the streets. Shops and the restaurants have reopened their doors. But some people are still looking for the dissapeared, others that are still imprisoned and also under the colorful city, illegal detentions happen all in the name of calm and progress, all in name of keeping an imposed governor that belongs to a political party whose scandalous scent of poverty can be smelled from far away. The governement bets on people's bad memory, on the forgotten, and believes that threats will have an eternal sedating effect. We are all suspicious. Artists whose work has been touched by the conflict have become persona non grata. There's registers and lists. Art also is evidence. Artists grouped in this exposition are not betting for the memory, but for concienceness. The works that have been selected depict an enviroment that the city experiences, much different as to what it is said to live.
